Here's how an Indian TV news channel like Times Now, NDTV 24x7,
Headlines Today would report the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme. All
names except those of Jack and Jill are fictitious.

Dramatize the entire act a lot more and you get the Hindi News Channel
version…. ;)

ENJOY !!!

Prashant - TV Anchor

Two persons have been injured in a freak climbing accident. Jack and
his companion Jill had gone up a hill to fetch a pail of water when
Jack fell down and broke his crown. Jill came tumbling after. Live
from the hill, our reporter, Amrita Shah, takes up the story.

Amrita Shah

Thank you Prashant. Well, as you say, two persons - Jack and Jill -
had gone up a hill to fetch a pail of water. Suddenly, Jack fell down
and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Prashant.

Prashant

Thank you Amrita. What do we know about the hill?

Amrita

Not too much. Jack was going up the hill to fetch a pail of water when
he fell down and broke his crown. Jill came tumbling after.

[Headline appears at the foot of the TV screen: "hill breaks crown of
pail-boy Jack"]

Prashant

What news of Jack and Jill?

Amrita

Prashant, it seems that Jack had gone up the hill to fetch a pail of
water. We know nothing about the pail, or how heavy it was but it
seems that Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling
after. I have here with me, an eyewitness to the accident, Mr Shahid
Trivedi. Mr Shahid, tell us what you saw.

Shahid Trivedi

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell
down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after.

[Headline appears at the foot of the TV screen: "Boy and girl tumble
down hill. Water spilled"]

Amrita

Jack and Jill. What do we know about them? Are they brother and
sister? Are they married? Just what were they doing on the hill
together?

Shahid Trivedi

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail a water.

Amrita

And what happened next?

Shahid Trivedi

Jack fell down and broke his crown

Amrita

Go on.

Shahid Trivedi

And Jill came tumbling after.

Amrita

Prashant, there you have it. Two people innocently going about their
business to fetch a pail of water when one of them falls down, breaks
his crown, and the other comes tumbling after. Back to you in the
studio Prashant.

[Headline appears at the foot of the TV screen: "Water errand ends in tragedy"]

Prashant

I have with me in the studio now, Professor Chandrashekar Belagare
from the Indian Institute of Applied Hill Sciences. Professor: a hill;
Jack; Jill; a pail of water. A tragedy waiting to happen?

Professor

Well that depends on the hill, the two persons, the object they were
carrying and the conditions underfoot. Let us look at the evidence so
far.

Jack and Jill

Went up the hill

To fetch a pail of water.

Jack fell down

And broke his crown

And Jill came tumbling after.

Clearly, one would suspect that if Jack's fall was severe enough to
break his crown then the surface of the hill must have been slippery
or unstable. But I think we're overlooking something quite fundamental
here. Who was carrying the pail? Jack fell down and broke his crown
and – this is the key – Jill came tumbling after. If Jack and Jill had
been carrying the pail together, would they not have fallen at the
same time? The fact that Jill came tumbling after suggests that Jack
lost his footing first and perhaps knocked Jill over as he slipped.

Prashant

Professor thank you very much. So there we have it, two persons – Jack
and Jill – went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down
and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Later in the
programme, Osama bin Laden captured in Afghanistan , President Bush
says rent-boy menage-a-trois was "just a brief lapse of judgement". But
next up, join us after the break for a studio discussion about hills,
boys and girls and whether water-fetching trips should be supervised.
We'll be right back... !!!

the oldest of them all

Today I went to the Kormangala store. It was the largest store of MM that I have visited. It has the second highest yearly sales for all MM stores. It is so big that they employ as many as 10 assistants on the floor. Many of the people I have met over the last few days have worked in this store. It is in operation for the last 9 years. The store Manager was relatively new to MM. He joined as a SM, as he had already some experience of managing stores for Big Bazar and Smart retails. I had a pretty long chat with him and it was a knowledgable session as he gave me some industry inputs from his past experience. I couldn't interact too much with the assistants today.
I went out to meet Bivore today. I went near his office. We had lunch today. He is overwhelmed by his workplace ;) He told me about the business of Oracle and how they have different businesses and how busy the work life of its employees is. It was great to know about the efficiency with which they work. He is also enjoying observing the systems and communication infrastructure that is in place. New experience for him and gr8 one at that. Best of luck to him!!!!!!

Tanuj
I visited the store on C.M.H. Road today. The store was a touch smaller. It had three floor assistants. There was no cashier and so the counter was managed by the store manager itself. I had a long chat with him. He was a supervisor at the warehouse before he joined the retail chains. So I got decent idea about how the stocks moved. Then I had chat with the assistants, who was working for this company for 4 years. He told me about how this company had changed in the last 4 years. As I talked with him I came to know a bit about the people who have been associated with these stores and also about the movement of the employees amongst the stores through out the country. Then I had a talk with the tailor and another of the floor assistant. I got some idea about how often these people get trainings and what all they do in the store. I had a chat with the store manager on how the recession has badly hit the sales of the stores. He also talked about the share of responsibility amongst the employees in the store. Then I talked to a new assistant as to how she was inducted into the organisation and what all she has to do. Late in he afternoon when there were no customers, then the SM called in for a training session. In the training session, the assistants were told about the different types of cloths that they sell in their stores. Moreover, they were told about the values of the company and what all they should keep in mind when they are interacting with a customer.

store visit begins

Today I visited the first store that is in C.V.Raman Nagar. Before going to the store I wasn't quite sure as to what I was supposed to do. Then I called up khushboo in the morning. She had visited a few stores in the past few days. So she told me to just go through the SOP and see how much time they take to complete each task. Anyways, so the store was quite close to my house. It is a pretty bright store. I liked the feel of the place. I went through the SOP and had a little chit chat with the store manager. He told me about the things that they do in the stores. He told me about the various processes and stock movement in the stores. How they advertize their store and how the accounts are maintained. Then I saw the registers that were maintained by the security person. As I chatted with the security person, I came to know a lot about him and about the schedule of the stores and those working in it. Thereafter, I went through the store and in the process had a little chat with the floor asssistants. I came to know about their background, their interests and how they work in the store and also bit bit about their experience of woring at the store. All in all a pretty good day.

Knowing the organisation

Hi all,

Today I actually started working on my project. I had some document on employee engagement from websites. So I went through it and started to use the points that I can use for my project. It is a pretty interesting topic, so to say. Also, today I got some idea about the people working in the organisation, I mean the organisational hierarchy. It is great to be sitting with the HR team. They told me about how the organisation is built up. Basically it is Arvind mills that are set up Gujrat, which produce threads for cloth which churns out very fine quality fabric that are used by Big Brands for making their clothing. So Megamart is the retail initiative of this group to give retail space to these brands. Apart from that there are brands like arrow, flying machine, wrangler etc. So there are many other brands that have tied up with megamart to get retail space. Slowly it is starting some in house brands and collaborating with other brands as well. So it is making great leaps with its large stores that it has come up with, in pune, chennai and bangalore.
My next work has been assigned to me. I will be visiting some stores of Megamart over the next few days. I will be looking into the activities in those stores. What do the employees do and how they do it. I am supposed to understand what is it that these employees look for, when they come to these stores. I am supposed to find put factors that keep them motivated. The schedule has been assigned to me by my guide. It will be great. I will be doing some store hopping over the next few days.

my first presentation

Hi,
Today was the day I gave my first presentation. Once I did my analysis, I made a presentation out of it, and then I gave my presentation the HR team with whom I am working. They gave had given me some ideas to work on and I made improvements on those as well. Then I went with the presentation to the guide who discussed the approach that I had taken. He was happy with the analysis that I did. Then he asked me to go through a few documents that told me about the company and its business. I was also given the analysis that the HR team had done. I used that to understand the intricacies of the project. Then based on my data I carried out the analysis. Then I showed the guide my results. He was pretty happy with what I gave him. So all in all a good day for me.

Have fun,
Tanuj...

it is all happening

Hey all you mordern laptop users... Ever worked on a PC with out a mouse, well I did so for three quarters of the day and still completed the analysis in that manner. just think of it, not using mouse but still using all the features of exel and power point. formating cells and applying formulas, creating charts etc. well it was a great experience. I know people think that I am a techie person but to come to think of it I end up in such situations that I am compelled to know how to use things in an unconventional manner. specially when it comes to use of electronic gadgets. Anyways, had great time at office. The months had just ended and it is the time to set the payroll spinning and it was really interesting to see all the different issues regarding salary payment that can crop up in just one day. well the room in which I sit has 3 HR people and it is interesting to see what all questions they have to face and how all they have to resolve different issues. there was a persons b'day so even had a cake there. yuhuuu.
had a chat with Vikash and Sonakshi in the evening. All you people in Jsr, you should be partying yaar. have fun!!!!!!!

Tanuj
Hey finally, I joined office. Today was the first day. I was given the filled questionnaire for the survey recently conducted by the organisation. They asked me to analyze it. It would have been great if I had been provided with a system to work on. Well believe it or not I was doing it on paper, Manually. I mean they expected me to do it on paper, but they were not able to provide me with one immediately. So till that time I had to do something, so I was doing it all manually. It was so messy and I realised what an amazing software Microsoft Exel is. I was seriously missing using it. I got a system to work on in the evening. It is a supercomp. P3 0.8 Ghz 128 mb ram. Well I am working on an antique piece. Once set up it didnt have office installed. so had to wait till that got installed. by the time it was done, my guide called me to ask what all I had done. Well I am not sure if I explained something to him or did I just confuse him. Whatever being the case we had a detailed discussion on the subject and on my growth path over the two months in his organisation. Thereafter, we had an interesting discussion on absenteeism as a psycological disease. He said he had done a study on it as a student. Thus he shared his experience while he was doing it. (Reckon a few people in our class do have a few things to say about absenteeism and its relation to the proxy culture.)

cool

hey amazing weather. I know most of you will be J of me when I say that it rained here today and the weather is really amazing.

Rapidfire

Great Da. finally went to meet the person at megamart, though with not much preparation ( A real bad habit I have picked up at XISS). Anyways he told me to speak first, i spoke for a while and then that was it, and then he started and went on and on and on. I hope to remember a bit of it and make some sense out of it. The topic is settled for. It is employee engagement. If anone else has any idea on how to go about it, please share your knowledge with me. For the time being I will be analyzing the a recent survey on satisfaction conducted by the organisation. Once I am done with it, I will get to work on my project. Interesting that I am getting a chance to do analysis first up. I was going to move around with my pen and paper for the next few days. But now I will be working on something so soon. it is great.

May Day

Hey its may day. Well kinda sleepy day. everyone is sleeping, so i also got lazy. got up late today. cooked lunch and then had a chat over phone with a few people. Then I travelled to the other end of the city to meet Bivore. We went to forum and had good time chatting. Well one thing I am pretty sure about after seeing him at McD was that he is not getting good food to it. (I hope now he would understand my plight in Ranchi). Anyways, took him to brigade road and tried to make him understand the roads of Bangalore.(Just the way world wors, you might not know about things but you can always explain to others). Anyways we roamed around quite a lot, through the crowded streets and had fun. He is having a good time in Oracle. Then company is good, maybe just a little too organised for his liking. But they have given him a good project and I am pretty sure that it will be very interesting two months. After roaming around for quite some time he left for home and then I met my old school friend, had dinner with him and then returned home.

huh!!!

Booze party last night. my mind is still numb. Dunno what all is going around. Just picked up a book and am reading it. Spent some time on the internet. hey I just came to know about a new service from google. create a group. ask people to subscribe to it. then just send one sms and everyone receives the message.I have made a group and will send an invite to all my batchmates. Just wait till I get the time. Ah I am so busy doing nothing.

Tanuj

meeting the folks

yahoo.... finally got to meet the HR folks at Megamart. Had a pretty good interaction with him. well it did seem like an interview, but it turned more into a discussion on the lack of dreams that our generation has and how the passion to achieve something or to do something is seldom seen in the students of b-schools. well I had nothing to defend there as even I feel the same. But then that was a healthy discussion. Then there was a discussion on passion at work. what was the outcome of it all? I was called after sometime to be given a project on Employee Engagement. I am asked to study a little on employee engagement and meet them by this weekend and tell them how it is beneficial to their organisation. That is Gr8!!!!!!!! well the only problem that it seems to me is the fact that I am clueless about what the engagement thing is. :P
I met khushboo today. I had planned to meet Bivore as well, but things didnt work-out that well. Actually we all stay pretty far away from each other. Anyways, we walked a lot. that was what our metting today, more or less was all about.

Anyways folks, if ye all got some idea about what employee engagement is, then please send it across to my email. it will be really helpful.

byee,
Tanuj

HR gyan on internship

Hey folks,

well some sorta advice for you people that comes from a HR manager at reliance fresh with whom I was having a chat, yesterday night. I justwanted to have a generalistic idea about how things work in summer internship and so just thought of asking a few questions in that regard (yeah some of you don't call me a question for no reason).
Anyways, so as it turns out to be, he said that this period should be utilised as much for observing as it is for working. No doubt we all have our projects to do and and other things as well, but at most places and in most indutries it wont take too much of time to understand the HR processes being carried out in those companies. It is important to look beyond that as well. In the time that is spent there, the motive should be to understand the operations that are carried out the companies. Though as HR people our job is to only look after the completion of the HR functions, but it is more important to understand that the level at which we work as student (or even as freshers after a years of time) HR functions are more or less to compliment the other processes that work around in the organisation. So as we will meet different people to fill out the surveys for our projects try and have a genralistic talk and try and understand the processes that are carried out in the different departments. Then, in free time think how the HR processes are build to compliment all the other processes.

well that was the guru gyan i got so thought of sharing it with you all.

bye,
Tanuj

Reached Kolkata

Today I reached Kolkata, and things havent sorted out as of yet. Some change in plans, as the person whome I had contacted at Relinace Fresh

has gone on a vacation and will be moving into a different department (T&D). And he has asked me to meet up with some different person. As

usual things have to be a little topsy turvy as far as I am concerned.

Hoping you all are having a gr8 time. Most of you must have gone to the cities in which you are going to do your internship. So keep your

experiences coming in. It will be great fun keeping track of each other.

Will finalize things once I reach back home in Kolkata. yeah i know i am a bit clumsy.
